Canada Defense Relations essays

Canada Defense Relations essays Canada-United States Defence Cooperation Since the 1940s when Prime Minister Mackenzie King signed the Ogdensburg Agreement, which acknowledged a joint board on the defence of North America, the Canadian-American cooperation in the defence of the continent has persisted and remained strong regardless of the continuous and evolving challenges. This relationship was tested rigorously over the years, especially during the 1950s. During this period, at the peak of the Cold war, Canadian and American defence relations were quite strong. The security of the entire continent was put at risk by the constant threat of nuclear strike. In September 1957, Canada and the United States agreed to create the North American Air Defence Command, better known as NORAD . Its main purpose was to defend the continent against the ever growing threat of Soviet bombers. On May 12th 1958, NORAD was formed and a strong defence relationship was formed between the two nations; one that would last for years. The formation included 11 principles which would govern the establishment and call for a renewal of the agreement, which was performed in 1968. The NORAD agreement between the two nations has been improved and revised several times since: May 1973; May 1980; March 1981 (change of name: North American Aerospace Defence Command); March 1986; April 1991; March 1996 and June 2000. The strength of the agreement and an indicatio n to the cooperation of U.S. and Canada is the continuous adaptation to the challenges posed by the ever changing threats. The new agreement (March 1996 renewal), included a consultative mechanism for issues concerning aerospace defence cooperation and, a provision for the review and management of environmental practices related to NORAD operations. As part of its aerospace control mission, NORAD also assists civil authorities in the detection and monitoring of aircraft suspected if ille...

Need to find a trending topic in the field of civil engineering Research Paper

Need to find a trending topic in the field of civil engineering - Research Paper Example The production involves an additive process different from the machining techniques that uses subtractive processes such as drilling and cutting. 3 D printing is exclusively done from digital models. The impact of 3 D printing is enormous and continues to shape the civil engineering sector. 3 D printing is being used in civil engineering in two main ways. Firstly, the technology has taken toll in prototyping. Engineers, architects and contractors have relied on 3 D prototyping in the recent times to manipulate designs and digital models to materials that are used in construction. It has been established that 3 D prototyping is an efficient, fast and cost friendly method in the fabrication of complex designs when high definitions are required. Prototyping enables production of high quality maps and plans that have well defined terrain and surface features. Secondly, distributed production has been utilized in the industry in manufacturing some of the raw materials. It takes into use d ispersed facilities used in manufacturing and are coordinated using information technology platforms. This aspect has boosted the activities of civil engineering industries that have a wide range of geographically separated activities. It reduces shipment and freight costs for the company. Engineering jobs have and will be affected by the technology. 3 D printing technology has been reported to contribute to job cut in the engineering sector (Frick 1). The automation in printing of models and the efficiency that accompanies has made many clients to seek 3 D printing services. For the last twenty years, 3 D printing companies in the world have demonstrated tremendous growth. Materialise, one of the companies that has retained the convectional methods, has employed approximately nine hundred people of which around eight hundred and fifty are engineers who play the role of designing projects’ processes. This number of engineers is so big compared to the companies that have embra ced 3 D printing technology such as the New York based 3 D printing manufacturer, Shapeways that has less than one hundred employees (Frick 1). The customized design apps that are supplied by Shapeways make the role of engineers to be limited hence the smaller number of engineers that are required. In addition, the apps are capable of facilitating creation of more complex structural models. The additive strategy adopted by 3 D technology has many benefits over the convectional subtractive manufacturing methods. The results of the technology are evidenced by the ability to do local production; the only requirement is to have the digital designs in place. The designs are distributable through digital platforms, thereby can be retrieved through a networked computer system. Stocking is another problem that is avoided. Conventionally, engineering companies have been producing models that are kept in the stores, with 3 D technology, production is based on demand. Another advantage of the technology is the ability to print wholesome products instead of joining parts together; this reduces the need for assembling while facilitating the production to be made at the point of demand. A deviation from the convectional manufacturing where engineering products were made in a particular fixed way, 3 D printing technology allows for customization of a product according to the specific needs of the client. In addition, the speed of production is highly improved, hence saving on the time required for the

Using illustrative examples, examine why competition authorities might Essay

Using illustrative examples, examine why competition authorities might be concerned about the way large companies behave - Essay Example It has been evident that many large firms indulge in unfair competition to gain advantage over their competitors by unfair means (Hewitt, Clark and Phillips, 2009); therefore competition authorities across the world are concerned about their behaviour. Firms grow so large that unilaterally they harm competition through monopolising the market and take advantage of their size to block threats arising from potential or existing competitors (Hewitt, Clark and Phillips, 2009). For example Microsoft the world’s largest software company indulge in similar such practices that denied other software companies an opportunity to build and market products competing with Microsoft’s products by building licensing agreements that were restrictive, exclusionary and unreasonable and thus monopolizing the client operating- system market by anti- competitive strategies (Justice, 1994 and Bloomberg, 2012). Large companies often make vertical or horizontal agreements with other firms called as cartel to fix prices not considering the reaction of either of its rivals or customers. Dominant firms fix higher price knowing that their customers have few alternatives and little choice other than accepting the firm’s offered higher price (The Competition authority (a), 2013). For example Automobile giant Daimler Mercedes-Benz found guilty of fixing prices in collaboration with five of its van and truck dealers, also shared sensitive commercial information and to some extent market sharing that negatively affected the competition in UK market however they were fined by UK’s antitrust authority of about  £2.6 Million (Reed, 2012 and Binham, 2013). Apart from fixing prices they also control markets or production or make agreements to share markets or supply sources so that rivals supply sources gets restricted. When doing business with other trading parties they put different

Tell-Tale Heart Essay Example for Free

Tell-Tale Heart Essay In Edgar Allan Poes The Tell-Tale Heart, the narrator has a hard time dealing with an old mans disfunctioned eye, and he becomes insane. In this story an old man is killed merely because of his eye. The narrator is crazy and cant stand the eye and he becomes outraged and suffocates the poor old man. Every night for weeks the narrator would peek his head in the old mans room and observe him sleep in everyway he could: Oh, you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust it in. (#) This quote shows how creepy the narrator truely was. He had been planning and watching the old man night after night before the very night he murdered him. The narrator was so precise and made everything perfected, or so he thought The night the murder was to occur the narrator was watching ever so carefully, the old man seemed to sense fear and awoken. He let out a loud groan, and told himself the fear was all in his head: It is nothing but the wind in the chimney- it is only a mouse crossing the floor, or it is merely a cricket which has made a single chirp.(#) The narrator was so cunning and sly the old man didnt even notice his long glares all night. So late that quiet night, the old man was suffocated in his sleep because of his careless thinking. The old man is now dead and left under the floorboards to rot. Unexpectedly a pair of policmen come knocking on the door, but the narrator had nothing to fear, for her was incredibly slick and clean about this whole thing. The narrator had welcomed the policemen inside the house to inspect everything and answer any questions needed: The officers were satisfied. My manner had convinced them. I was singularly at ease. They sat and while I answered cheerily, they chatted of familiar things. But, ere long, I felt pale and wished them gone. (#) The narrator sweet talked his way out of the officers until they stayed so long his concience began to catch up with him. It made him so sick he couldnt take it. Just when he thought he was safe, he was completely wrong.  The narrator couldnt take it anymore, he confessed and opened the floorboards for the officers to see. Off to the slammer for him.

Yemen Essay -- Yemens Government, Politics

In spite of Yemen’s desire to be a world player, internal strife and an upswing of insurgent activity is pulling the country apart. Yemen occupies the southernmost region of the Arabian Peninsula, sharing boarders with Saudi Arabia and Oman. Yemen enjoys many miles of coastline. The port of Aden is so located as to be the shipping center for the country. This paper’s purpose is to provide information and intelligence assessment for the following areas; history, government, foreign relations, demographics, economy, military and the current threat posed by Yemen. An influx of militants from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Afghanistan has raised concerns that Yemen has become an Al-Qaede haven (2). This concern contrasts with the government’s efforts in counterterrorism and the goal of being a legitimate world player. I assess that Yemen has seen what seems to be a typical inception and growth for countries of the Middle-East. Prior to the region being named â€Å"Yemen†, it fell under the control of several fleeting kingdoms between the 12th century BC and the 6th century AD. Beginning in the 7th century AD, Islamic caliphs began to exercise control within the region later known as Yemen (1). The Ottoman Turks, as they gained control of the Middle East occupied all of Northern Yemen until there withdraw in 1918 (1). As World War II draws to an end, Yemen joins the Arab League in 1945 and the U.N. in 1947 (1). However, at this point Yemen is still divided in to two states, the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR) and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY). It took years for the two factions to agree on unification and another decade for a constitution to be agreed to. On 22 May 1990 The Republic of Yemen was declared. I assess that Yemen’s... ...le-East countries, is standing in between the government’s progressive policies and the extremist views of the Muslim radicals. And in a time where having the wrong ally can bring the wrath of the radicals down on you, Yemen is looking in all directions for help. The civil discontent, a weak economy and a growing number of terrorist calling Yemen home put Yemen in a precarious position. The aid they receive from the U.S. helps the government and people while at the same time allowing the insurgents to point fingers at week leadership. As for the U.S., we must proceed cautiously. A true ally in region is invaluable. But a weak ally could draw the U.S. into further conflicts or stretch the amount of aid we send to a region. In my opinion it is better to keep Yemen close. Helping Yemen along allows us to keep our finger a little more closely on the pulse of our foes.

Samauel of the Bible - 598 Words

During the times of Samuel, he was a young man who was recognized as an uprising prophet throughout Israel, sharing God’s word amongst the nation. During this time, there was a vicious battle among the Israelites and the philistines though the battle the Israelites lost the Ark of the Covenant to the philistines. After the battle the Israelites are looking to select a great king to represent the Israelites and Samuel believe that’s Saul will be the king and bring a bright future. During this stressful time the Israelites are in need of a leader due to the battle against the Philistines, although Saul was rejected, David showed he was a superior king than Saul and the sin of Solomon. During the times of Samuel in 1 Samuel 8, Samuel began to grow old and it was getting to appoint that he needed to make one of his two sons the King of Israel. The issue was that Samuel’s sons Joel and Abijah did not want to follow in their father’s footsteps so the only choice Samuel had was to respect his son’s choices. So the elders of Israel gathered together to confront Samuel and emphasize that the people of Israel need a leader quickly. So Samuel went to pray to the lord and the lord said this to him â€Å"And the lord told him: â€Å"Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to
